The Problem with Twitter (and with Blogger and with Soldiers)

The fact that one is on Twitter usually implies that nothing very interesting is happening. Of course mobile devices help, but it's still usually the last thing on one's mind when there's action. The same problem exists with blogging.

Sitting in the Israeli checkpoint at Jalame, I realised that soldiers create the same problem for photography and film. The very fact that they are so powerful, paranoid and oppressive makes them both interesting subjects and willing and able to take away my camera if I photograph or film them.

It's also very hard to capture the mood or feeling of a place at a moment in time. Without sound it's definitely impossible, but it would also help if snapshots were consumed with simulated temperature, smell and airflow. Even the feeling of having already eaten matters. The Virtual Barbershop is a creative try using only audio. Put on headphones and close your eyes, and if possible have a friend touch your head at the right times.

I don't see this as bad: it means some things in life must still be experienced.
